What's involved in a Building Access Audit

A building access audit assessed for compliance against BCA and Premises Standards requirements and identifies access barriers and areas of potential liability with the Disability Discrimination Act. We can tailor a Building Access Audit to suit your needs. An access audit can assist you in identifying elements which are creating a barrier for access and prioritise improvements which remove the barriers.

Access for all is a fundamental right and all people should have dignified equitable access. The provision of access can increase your potential customer/client base as well as reduce the risk of liabilities.

Why are Building Access Audits important?

Building access audits are a fantastic starting point for organisations to address accessibility concerns and issues and form practical solutions to achieve compliance. Access audits are a great tool in assessing how facilities, customer interaction points, and organisational processes stack up against this expectation of inclusion for everyone.  it is also important to acknowledge existing building that may have been accessibility compliant twenty years ago may not be compliant now.  Legislation may have changed or if the building has had a change of use there could be different access barriers.

What happens after the building access barriers are identified?

Once the buildings access barriers have been identified we will put together a report outlining any access barriers and any accessibility compliance issues and assist and guide you in solving these issues.  It will be up to the organisation to implement the suggested changes to improve the premises.  If you refuse to address any access barriers you could be looked upon unfavourably by a commission or court if you have a complaint about accessibility, particularly given you have knowingly been negligent by not addressing any access barriers. It is however understood by the Australian Human Right Commission and the Federal Court of Australia that not all work to improve accessibility can be completed as soon as issues are identified. The benefit to engaging an access consultants for a building access audit is that it shows the organisation is taking reasonable steps have been taken to make improvement into the future.
