An access audit is an assessment that measures a building for usability and accessibility for all people including those with a disability.  First and foremost, barriers or potential barriers are determined that may cause difficulty or prevent a person with a disability from accessing a public space or building.  A qualified access consultant will inspect the building and prepare a detailed report highlighting the areas that require access modifications.  The access audit considers all the relevant legislation such as the Building Code of Australia (BCA) as well as the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).

What is assessed in an access audit?

The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) outlines that a person with a disability has a right to have equal access to public places within the built environment.  If there are areas within the built environment that present barriers for people with a disability you could be in breach of the DDA and risk legal ramifications if there are any complaints.  Accessible buildings enable equal use of buildings and facilities within the built environment.

Benefits of an Access Audit

Access audits are completed to improve accessibility and maneuverability in the built environment which could be impacting the accessibility to the wider community.  Access audits are beneficial to both the public and to the business owner/s of the building or area.  Additionally, the site-specific assessment will outline the changes that may be required to comply with the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and the Disability and Discrimination Act (DDA).
